Business Modelling

OIG's success has been built upon our ability to accurately capture business in software. We achieve this by isolating the stable concepts of a business and encapsulating these as discrete units of software, ie components. Thereby enabling the business concepts to be directly represented in software.

Business processes and practices come and go, ie they are the more dynamic, changeable part of the business. The software which represents these processes and practices, therefore will also need to be frequently updated to reflect these changes.

Business processes and practices are modelled by combining a number of components so that they can interact. When the business changes its processes or practices, this can easily be reflected in the software, simply by changing the interactions, or at most the combination of components. The actual components remain unchanged, as do the stable business concepts.

In this way, a one-to-one correspondence between the business and software is achieved. Thus enabling any changes in business practices to be immediately, and directly reflected in the systems that keep them running, instead of the business having to change its practices to suit the system !

If these software components are well designed they can be used again and again, across many applications within a company. That is, software development becomes more like other industries, for example the motor industry, where cars are built by combining pre-made components.

We can provide business-aware, experienced facilitators to help you identify the concepts which are central to your business and then model these in a recognised notation and/or software. An accurate representation of your key business areas, can help you either develop systems which fully support your business practices, or choose the product that provides the best match with your particular enterprise.

Our experience has shown that object technology (OT) is particularly good at enabling business concepts to be directly represented in software. So we frequently use UML and J2EE in our business modelling.

If the product you are interested in is an entity-based product we can help you with the object-entity mappings. Or, alternatively if you have already made a large investment in entity models we can map these to your corporate object model.
